Default 2 issues with an 04 x type

i forgot to post these about the car i test drove yesterday (04 3.0 sport)
1. i heard a squeel coming from behind the steering wheel when turning, barely noticable but i heard it

2. the engine was up to temp and running when i saw it, the coolant expansion tank was empty, does it normally empty when running?.
Car ran smooth. Forgot to check for oil in the water/water in the oil as i was so excited :+)

i told the owner to top up the coolant before he brings it to me, so i'll see if its full when he gets here.

There is a "sticky" in the X-Type FAQs about the steering wheel squeak:

And, no the expansion tank shouldn't be "empty".

Hmmm just had experience of an empty coolant tank in my sons Clio when I knew it was full previously.
Yep for sure upon checking the underside of the oil cap was gungy and the dipstick was like mayonnaise when pulled.......cylinder head gasket

Not saying thats the case here but certainly very well worth checking!!

iownme, normally with the X-Types, if you have an empty coolant bottle, it is the hose inlet at the bottom front of the tank develops a crack in it and then allows all the coolant to come out of the vehicle. So, give the tank a good look. If it isn't that, then take a look at the water pump and the hoses right there. If you are going to have a leak, it will 99% of the time be right in that area. But, with the coolant level low, it is going to be hard to see where the leak is. So, you will probably want to put in some water to the overflow bottle to help located the leak location. Odds are, you will end up draining out most of the coolant to repair whatever is bad. So, no crime in putting a lot of water into the coolant system for a short period of time.

thanks guys, i'm already preferring this forum to all the others i've been a member of (for various vehicles)
Tomorrow i'll start going over the car in detail
I bit the bullet today and bought the X for 6200 + 200 delivery/gas/tolls,
I am totally in love with it, it runs roughish at high speed (vibration not engine...i'll go into detail in seperate posts)
I saw it as a beautiful orphan car in need of an owner like me...(yeah...i should get out more, hehe) so i know i'll have some expense and time to get it to the standard i'd expect from my car.
I do all my own work and often rely on forums to help work through problems....when i have a good knowledge of the vehicle i start responding to posts as well as just looking for answers...expect a lot of questions for the next month!!!
To start with the battery is kapot...had to jump it to start it when he arrived...this evening i've been sitting in the car in the dark, just loving it!...
tomorrow i'll go pick up a new battery.
I can't drive it til it all"paper'ed up" which will be a few days...so for now i'll get busy with the vacuum...hehe
