Just bought an X type auto again after vowing I'd never buy another Jaguar!

Anyway the problem is this. When I put car into drive nothing happens. However if I put car lever in the 3rd position it will drive. I can then move the lever into 4 or drive and the car is fine, showing all the correct lights (Drive,2nd etc)

Does the car have adjustable cables like the S type? or would it be the gear range selector? I don't think its the box itself because once it's been running there are no problems until starting the car again, to which you have to put it into third etc. It's an annoying problem and a so called mechanic who looked at it suggested that I just left all the casing off that sits under the gear selector and drove it like that!

Not an expert but it looks like you need a new gear shifter assembly.

 

Well after a numpty Mechanic looked at my car and blew several fuses I had a look myself. After replacing the fuse to the inhibitor, I found that all gears worked correctly with the selector loose. All I had to do was adjust the cable by about 4 millimetres and its fixed!
