Steven, when this happens, I want you to look down at your gear shifter and tell me if you see the lights on it. I bet you will find that the lights are out on the gear shift too. Based on what you are describing, I would try replacing fuse F80 in the passenger area fuse box. It should be a 7.5 amp fuse. It may be possible that this is getting old and it is either developing a high resistance or the fuse is on its way out and it is making intermittent contact. The other issue I have seen happen is the terminals that the fuse slides into can get a bit stretched with time and they won't make good connection. This is a bit more difficult to fix properly as you have to pull the fuse box and then pull the terminals out of the fuse box. You might be able to get a small scribe or something and try flexing the terminals a little bit. The other quick fix is to take the fuse and twist the tabs on the fuse just a slight amount. This will force the fuse to make contact. The problem with this is long term in that if you ever have a fuse blow in this location, it is not going to work until you twist the blades on that fuse too and you will find that over time, you will have to twist it more and more.
