Default 2002 Jaguar X Type Reverse Problem

Hello All,
I'm new the world of forums. I've searched and searched but I can't seem to find anyone else with my problem. I have a 2002 X type 3.0 automatic with 87k miles. Recently, the car would struggle to go in reverse but would kick into gear around 3,000 RPM. Lately, if the car is sitting on a flat surface and I put the car in Reverse, it engages Reverse (you can hear the cling of metal) and it coasts backwards as normal. However, when I give it gas the RPMs sky rocket and it does not move any faster. In drive I can fly through gears at any speed with no issues. I have no engine lights, no codes being thrown, nothing. If there are any threads about this, feel free to post links. Doing what i can before replacing the transmission. Thank you.

Default PS

Also, when you engage reverse, the tires roll back like they want to go backwards but slowly stop.

Cporto, from what you are describing, it is sounding like the reverse band is shot and that is going to result in a rebuild of the tranny.

Are transmission issues common with one year over another? They don't seem too common in general. What do you suppose that'd cost to rebuild?

Jag4, I would think that if you were to just take the car to a tranny place and say "rebuild the tranny", you can plan on a $3K bill. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into a tranny rebuild. So, unfortunately, the time is what kills the budget on that. Granted, do not be surprised if you hear "we can't rebuild that tranny, it is a jaguar tranny". Move on to the next shop. You don't have anything fancy in your tranny that a general shop can't fix.
