Default 2002 Xtype GearBox malfuntion

Hi i'm new here. I just bought a 2002 xtype and WITHOUT WARRANTY
on the way home it went into limp mode and told me that I have a gearbox fault and accompanied by cruise control unavailible on the cluster.
I don't know where to start looking for the cause. It has 100k miles. Is there some sort of sensor fault or something like that. It won't go out of 3rd gear and is really slow on the start....I googled it and they called it limp mode. Is it just some kind a sensor that could be faulty or is it something more mechanical. I am a diy kinda guy and refuse to take it to a mechanic, be without a car for a week, pay 1k and still having the same problem because he couldn't fix it. I would like to start with the simplest moving on to the most difficult. Let me know thanks.

I think this fault has been seen a number of times before try searching the forum for a solution or advice.

If you bought it from a garage do you have any right to return as it's possible the fault was known to exist by the seller?
