S Type purchase

S Type purchase
This is kind of a weird question, but here goes: I am looking at an S Type that is advertised as having a Sport package and as a 2000 model year. Two questions actually. One, the car is advertised as a 2000 model year, but when I got the VIN and ran a Carfax report, the report says it is a 2002 model year, shipped to the original dealer in May, 2001 and sold in October, 2001. How can I find out for certain what model year it is? Should I consider Carfax to be the solid source? Two, there is no badging showing the car as a sport option package. The only indication is the 17" alloy wheels. Should there be any other indicators? I also own a 1990 XJ-S and know much more about it than I do about my (almost) S-Type. Thanks for your help!

There will be a plate inside the drivers door jamb giving the manufacture date of the vehicle.
If you can stretch to a post 2003 car a lot of problems were resolved.
I'm not sure of the sport package on the earlier cars but on the post 2003 models they were minimal, larger front brakes, body coloured corner trims and grille come to mind.

Carfax or similar should not be used as the final word on anything. A solid inspection done by yourself or someone you trust, plus due diligence on the records is the best course.
There is no badging on any year S-type that designates the sport models, nor are the contents of the package consistent over all years. The larger wheels are the most obvious clue.

I don't think there is a definitive answer Jeff's answer in the other post relates to 2005 which I'm sure is different to the 2000 spec.

When is an S-Type a "Sport" model
+1 to Mikey . . . but also . . .
How to find out for certain is right here . . . and in your VIN number!
The S-Type will be a Sport Series only when Jaguar says it is . . . and it is clearly marked. No badges, but look to resources here. Find out what your VIN contains. Look to PREFIX positions 6 & 7 . . . it is all explained in the stickies here at top of section. Jaguar records of sequential MY numbers at end of VIN were accurate for giving year of manufacture in early years - totally unreliable for 2007/8.
Plenty of evidence that fitout, options etc were tailored according to market - rarest S-Type down under in Australia would be the "02" - that's not MY02 but the base model (whatever the year). Overwhelmingly, our S-Types were "01" for Luxury top-of-the-line models, complemented by the less common "03" denoting "Sport". Wheels/Rims and tyres/tires are maybe an unreliable clue as Jaguar always offered a plentiful array of options.
Hope this helps,
Ken

There was a prefacelift Sport too, at least in Europe, but it was mainly a cosmetic model:
18" BBS Monaco wheels
Colour-coded trim
CAT optional on the 3.0, standard on the 4.0
Perforated sports seats
Not standard: sunroof, seat memory, lumbar support.
All pre-facelift cars had the same 300mm/288mm brakes. Non-CATs cars all had same dampers and springs.
