Default 2003 X Type 2.5 Gearbox fault

I've read dozens of articles on this issue and just getting more confused, so I hope you don't mind me posting this here.
I'm having issues with my 2003 X Type, 2.5 auto trans.
If I shift from 2 to 3 to 4 all is fine, but when placed in D, the gearbox fault light comes on and D light does not light and the 4th gear light stays on, with no issues driving (no limp mode). If I go back to P and then to D, all is fine. If I put in P and shut the engine off and restart, no gearbox fault and it drives fine.
My shop believes the transmission range sensor if bad. Of course, a new one is $950 bucks US. We did check the harness and connectors as it is under the battery, but they were fine. We checked the TCM connectors and they are fine.
I'm wondering about maybe an issue in the Z Gate shifter circuit as it only happens changing from D to 4 and back to D. Can an issue there cause the gear position light not switch (from 4 to D) cause this? What controls the shift lights for 4 and D and do these feed back to the TCM causing the gearbox fault indicator? I'm not sure a cable adjustment is needed from what is seen in the 4 and D ranges only, but maybe I'm wrong. All other gear positions are fine, it's only 4 and D.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for the reply.
I'm don't believe this is the same issue as in that thread.
My transmission engages all gears fine and reads properly on the Z Gate shifter and It has never had a limp mode issue.
The issue is only present when manually shifting from 4 to D, the light indicator stays at 4. When this happens and the engine running, the Gearbox fault light comes on.
I did fail to report the car has a DTC P0915 which will not allow the comprehensive system checks to complete, so it fails smog in California.
I am going to install a used Range switch first and test from there.

The link has both cable and shift component on trans. I believe it is one or both, but up to you to decide.

P0915 is a gear shifting failure, not smog.
