Default 2003 X-Type Engine squeal

I have a noise when I start my 2003 xtype. It only lasts for about a minute. When she warms up she is fine. Happens when engine is cold. Sounds really weird! No Engine light . nothing showing on dash. What could it be.
Would really appreciate some help. 74,ooo miles

Welcome to the forum Steve,

I've copied your question from Intro to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Sounds like a slipping belt to me. Classic for your description.

Most likely it's your serpentine belt on front (passenger side) of the engine. It runs most of the accessories: alternator, AC compressor, PS pump. In addition to that there's two idler pulleys and one on the belt tensioner. The belt wears out with time and the pulley bearings get dry of grease. It's a relatively tough DIY job because of the tight quarters; you'll need a serpentine belt tool or fabricate your own because there's not enough room to fit a standard 3/8" socket wrench or breaker bar into the tensioner recess. To get to everything you need to put the front end up and remove RF wheel, then remove the access panel in the wheel well. Make or get a diagram of the belt routing before you take the belt off. You'll find a serp belt tool at Northern Toll or Harbor Freight for about $20; I had to cut a few inches off the handle to clear the axle. Be sure to check everything, and after reassembly you can run engine briefly while car is still up on stands to make sure it's a good fix. You won't want to have to repeat this job if you've missed something.
