2 fuel pumps, really!!!!!! Huh, news to me. Looking at the JTIS, it only shows a single pump. I look on http://www.jaguarparts.com (Jag dealership out of Cleveland) and they only show a single pump. They show the pump for $341 plus a $177 core. Now, I will admit that doing the fuel pump on an X-Type is one of the harder cars to do, but I think with your mechanical background, you could do it yourself. The hard part of this job is getting the rear driveshaft out of the way prior to being able to drop the tank. The rest would be like any other vehicle. I would pay the shop the $200 for their diagnostics and then replace it yourself. With the help of a friend to help steady the tank, you can do this job in an afternoon easy.

Unless i am missing something, I think the shop is trying to get some money out of you. Maybe someone else can prove me wrong. I just don't see it in the drawings. Now, I do see where there is a transfer pump between the two sides of the tank (due to the hump in the center due to the driveshaft. Could they be talking about this? I would be placing more money on something like the fuel pump module than the fuel pump(s) themselves going bad. I mean, having 1 item fail taking out 2 things is much more likely than having 2 things fail at the same time.

On 2.5L and 3.0L vehicles the fuel tank is of a saddle design, a fuel pump module and a transfer pump module are incorporated. The fuel pump module, located in the right-hand saddle, transfers high pressure fuel (low flow) to the left-hand side of the fuel tank. The transfer pump module, located in the left-hand saddle, then transfers low pressure fuel (high flow) towards the right-hand fuel pump and the engine.

My guess the dealer wants to get two birds with one stone..if one is bad the other may not be far behind.

You have only 1 electric pump on the passenger side and a jet pump on the drivers side. You also have to drop the diff down from its 2 center mounts to get the tank past the front yoke

Not to overly point out the obvious, but this job is a tad easier with a low fuel level. Makes maneuvers a lot easier. Something to consider if you intend to tackle it yourself.

I fondly remember dropping a very near full 20 gal fuel tank out of my buddy's Saab 9-3 on my hand, which happened to be laying on a concrete floor. Good times.......at the doctors. He owed me a few beers after that one. Come to think of it we also set an Autozone on fire during the course of that job, but that's another story.
