Default 2004 Jaguar X-type clutch will not engage

My car was driving down the road in 5th gear when it began to slow down and then would not move. The clutch will not engage. It will not go into any gears. Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Does the engine still turn over freely?
If the engine runs happily but you have no drive then it sounds like the clutch has gone.
If the engine won't turn over then maybe something in the drive train has seized.

The engine turns over and runs good. You can hear the transmission trying to engage but not with a bad sound. I guy that looked at it today was thinking maybe a gear in the axle. How hard is the clutch to replace? What do you think about the axle it is all wheel drive. Only thing out of the ordinary is a burning smell around the rear tire on the drivers side. Thank for any ideas.

In fact the shifter kinda moves through the gears without pressing the clutch.

It might be worth jacking the car up with all four wheels off the ground (and free to turn) and seeing if you are getting any drive to any of the wheels.
Normally when a clutch goes you get the burning smell first, reluctant gear changes and then it packs up.
I've only had mine for a month so don't have much experience of it yet so am only writing what pops into my head from previous vehicles.
A friend of mine (many, many moons ago) had a similar problem with his Mark 3 Ford Cortina but that was because his gear stick fell off!
