Mike, what year X-Type do you have as the wiring changed in early 2004. If you have a 2004 model, then also include the month that it was built (located on the sticker in the driver's door jam area). From there we can get this figured out for you.
The thing that I would try first is switching the starter relay with another one of the same rating. Then see if your problem continues. It is very possible that your relay has failed internally and that is the root of your problems. After that, we will need to do more testing. On a side note, how are you with using a multimeter? That will help me tailor the tests you do to what your skills are.
