Angry 2005 X Type 3.0 PTU Unit

My car died the other day and the transmission guy states I need a new PTU (Power Takeoff Unit). I knew it was something to do with the tranny as the car gears crunched and then my car rolled to an ever ending stop. The transmission has been acting funky for about 6 months with high RPMs and little jolts through a couple of the gears. I've been trying to find a used PTU because this is the second time this has went out on my car. The first one at 58,000 and this time at 160,000. A new PTU unit is supposedly $2200.00 with about $900.00 labor. I really don't want to put this much $ into this car and hope the tranny is still good- the mechanic thinks it is.

Is it called something else besides PTU? Nothing comes up with this name related to my car on Google.

Reach out to Dr Dome. He is a forum member that parts out x-types and can get you what you need. Call or text 484-903-4813.
I think the correct name for what you are looking for is "transfer case"

The transfer case issues seemed to be more of an issue in the early model cars, 2002-2004. To have a 2005 go at 58,000 miles is very unusual, if it is the transfer case and then to have another go 100K later is also unusual. If it is the trasfer case, have you ever changed the fluid in it since you owned the car?

Thumbs up Dr. Dome

Thank you for the info on Dr. Dome! He set me up with a new transfer case. It sounds like he has all kinds of parts for x-types if anyone needs them! He was very informational and the problem probably was the oil not being changed in the transfer case after all those miles. I guess I never knew and my regular mechanic didn't bring it up. Now I wonder what else I'm doing wrong!

Hopefully you will be good for at least another100K miles. Just change the fluid a couple times along the way.and you should be good.

Do a SEARCH in this forum for fluid maintenance changes. Some of these are not listed as "normal" changes in the Jaguar maintenance schedule (i.e. transfer case fluid change, so called ("permanent" fluid). My thread(s) on fluid changes is one place with information, the transfer case one shows pics and description of how scary bad my fluid was when changed. Owners have, with experience, come up with (sometimes novel) ways, procedures, fluids, etc. to address these issues. Like greasing the carrier bearing, alternates to scary "tipping" of our cars to change the transfer case fluid, "thermo'd" type front lower rear control arms (adjustable to fix the rear tire squatting and tire wear), etc.
