Default 2007 X-Type

Xtype 3.0 carburetor appears to have a coolant line that runs through the bottom of it. When i recently removed everything for sparkplug replacement I was checking everything over and actually had coolant running out of carb. Is this normal? Am I looking at head gasket? I smell antifreeze often and think it is in exhaust so am thinking its bad but no leaks are visible. What do I test and what is the coolant line through carb base for? I've been having troubles with coolant fan running on high speed when car is first on. I've been through many modules and 2 fans due to poor aftermarket construction but maybe it has been gasket all along. Can you help?

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

"carburetor"?

I think it's maybe the Throttle Body (TB) and they commonly have coolant/heater fluid.

Try the workshop manual to figure out what you mean.

Blondie, the coolant line that runs through the "carburetor" (it is actually a throttle body as there are no fuel controls there). The purpose of that is to ensure that the incoming air is sufficiently high to ensure the fuel vaporizes as it enters the cylinder to ensure more complete fuel burn for emissions.

If you think you have a leak, lets do a test. Lets start off with using a garden hose and rinse out the engine bay. Of note, DO NOT!!!!!!! spray across the top of the engine. Spray around the engine, spray the sides, but NEVER!!!!!! spray down on to the top of the engine. Now, do a run to the local auto parts store to rent a coolant pressure tester (near me, you pay for the tool, you use it, when you return it in good condition, you get the full amount back). Drive the car home and park it for 30 minutes or so (ensure to have the hood/bonnet open to allow the engine to cool slightly). At this point, remove the cap off of the overflow bottle (may have some pressure still on it, so, be careful doing this, may want to have a towel over your hand to provide some protection). Find the correct cap from the kit to fit your overflow bottle. Attach the pump and press the tank up to around 20 psi (near the green/yellow line on the gauge). Start looking in the engine bay for coolant to be leaking somewhere. Having a black light will help as there is a flourescent dye already in most coolants. Locate the leak. Look in the throttle body and see if you have coolant leaking into that. I would also check the nipple on the back of the overflow bottle to see if you are loosing coolant there (common problem on the X-type). Repair anything leaking.

As for your fans. This is a loaded thing that you need to understand what will cause the fans to run. yes, the fans will run if the engine is warm. But, with the motor ice cold, the fans will run if you have the A/C turned on. This includes having the defroster turned on (as it uses the A/C system to dry the air coming out of the vents). So, any time you are checking fan operation, you need to ensure the motor is cold and the A/C is off to check for no fan operation and then you can turn on the A/C to max (ie, fan on max speed, temp dialed all the way down). With the A/C on max, this will cause the fan to run at max speed. At max speed, you should be able to lean over the radiator and get a good breeze of air in your face. if you get a gentle breeze, then your fan controller is starting to go.

Lets start here and then we can narrow down what is really a problem and what is working like it should.
