2008 X-Type headlamp malfunction
Our low mileage 2008 X-Type has a mysterious headlamp malfunction. The local dealer went out of business. Service now available at Land Rover dealer. No local reliable independent svc techs. Problem: right headlamp low beam went out. Had tech check and they could not find a problem. I cleaned all contacts, and jiggled a few things and right headlamp functioned okay. Week or so later left headlamp went out. Took car to shop and they jiggled a few things and both headlamp low beams working okay. Two weeks later both headlamp low beams out. Only courtesy lamps go on.
Checked relays and fuses. all seems to be okay. Any ideas?

jaro, do you have HID headlights or standard halogen headlights? There are slight differences between the two and I am sure with a simple answer to this, we can get you fixed up. If you are not sure whether you have HIDs or halogens, looking in the driver's door jam and if you have a sticker between the hinges saying that you have HIDs installed, then you have HIDs. If no sticker, then you have halogen bulbs.

Jaro, I would first open up the hood of your car and open up the fuse box. Located relay R11 and swap it with relay R4 (wiper motor relay and R4 is up and to the left of R11). Did this fix your headlight issue? If yes, you have a bad relay. Next, get a second person and with the key in the RUN position, turn on the headlight as you have your ear near R11. Are you hearing it click? If no, then you most likely have a problem with the control circuit (write back here and I will give you a few checks to do and also, how good are you with using a multimeter?). If yes, then give fuses F29 and F30 a check to make sure that you have good fuses.
From here, the best advice will be that you will need to dedicate an afternoon to pulling the front bump cover off of the car and then removing the headlights to do a detailed inspection of the headlight plugs. From the sounds of things, if you have made it this far, you are looking at corroded plugs and you are experiencing a high resistance connection leading to the headlights not working. If you want me to go into more detail about this, write here and I will help you out.
