2009 x type Sovereign 2.2 diesel turbo
Intermittent "Communication error -consult your dealer" message upon turning on the ignition. When selecting 'climate', 'ignition off - no a/c' was displayed, and the remote locking key wouldn't work, nor would the headlight relay engage. The indicators worked but the arrows on the dash came on but didn't flash. These conditions came on and off as I drove the car. The last electrical job I did was fitting a towbar socket, so I checked my wiring in the boot but found nothing amiss. I checked the integrity of the connections to the modules installed but all seemed ok, however, when I restarted the car the faults had disappeared! Can anyone hazard a guess at what I might have inadvertently done in the boot to cure the problem? Is there a common factor to these faults located in the boot area? Earths possibly?
Hi Emlyn,
I am new to this model myself and don't have the diesel, but happy to help if I can.
The tail light wiring is all analogue, so I can't see that creating any upstream comms problems with you fitting a towbar socket.
There are multiple earthing points around the car to support close proximity to various modules and higher current accessories, so again, I don't think that is your likely issue.
Is this a daily driver for you or does it sit for long periods?
These cars are known to be fussy on having a good battery voltage and if the battery is a bit soft they are known to throw many odd vague errors in the instrument cluster and OBD2 fault codes.
So checking the battery condition/health is a good place to start - check you battery voltage with a good meter. You want to probably see around 12.8 volts with ignition off and it not too much voltage dip (0.1 or 0.2 volt drop) if you add some load such as turning head lights on.
Once car is started the alternator will be charging the battery so you will see 13.2 or over 14V depending on what the ECM is telling the alternator to supply for recharging.
