Default 3rd gear or so HELP!

When I am in 3rd gear or so at a constant speed (accelerating from 35 -45 or so) I can feel my 2003 x-type "putting" or something. Any idea as to whats going on? Are some bands loose? Transmission trouble?

ANY help would be great!!

Thanks!

Is your car manual or an automatic as this will change the diagnostic completely.

I won't be of much help because my car is a manual, but if your car is close to 80k miles or so, I would recommend an atf flush. I have seen and heard of many cars which have been cured because of new transmission fluid.

It is hard to tell however, from this little of information because there is no way to tell right now if it is your engine that is putting or your transmission that is slipping. Does the engine stay at the same rpms or is it the engine that is sputtering? Is it a constant thing that happens all the time? Has it ever happened at any other speed or gear?

disguay - which auto trans fluid do you recommend for a manual trans 2.5L? Also, it is just a drain and fill and not a flush for manual trans right?

The engine does stay at the same rpm. While at a constant speed between 32 and 47 roughly, it sort of "bucks", not a whole lot, but it still does it. It is a constant thing. Never happened at any other speeds or gears.

Thoughts?

For an automatic transmission you will have to flush it. What is this "bucking?" Is it a lack of power, a stopping or starting motion, and do any noises accompany the bucking? I'm still trying to figure out if it could be a vacuum leak in the engine or your torque converter not getting enough fluid

no noises, its feels as if when im accelerating, there is hesitation around the 40 mph mark.

You know the feeling when you come to a complete stop then you press on the gas right away, and its as if something needs to catch up to where your rpms are. and it kind of "jumps" or "bucks" to that point. thats the feeling. except at 40 mph. its not bad, but it is worrisome. I am taking it to jaguar tomorrow to have them look at it. I hope its not to expensive. that would be an awful start to the weekend.

If anyone has any thoughts between now and tomorrow morning please let me know

much appreciated.

The lag seems like the vacuum leak, yet if it bucks, I would point to either a faulty torque converter or a faulty viscous coupling in your drivetrain. Those are the two points which can slip and would cause the feeling that the car has to catch up to itself. If you have ever driven a manual and you rev the engine up to 3000 and then take your foot off the clutch slowly, it should feel the same way as a faulty torque converter, or one without enough fluid. I would suspect still that it is the fluid
