Default ABS fault?

Hello, Recently I had to brake really hard twice and I have noticed that as soon as I hit my brake pedal my left front wheel locks straight away and it's loads of smoke comes out of it with smell of burning rubber. This should not happen if car is equipped with ABS. One thing I can think of is the faulty abs sensor in that wheel, but why no warning lights came up on the dash?
Please help,
Regards,
Chris.

Before diving into the ABS system, first make sure the warning light hasn't been tampered with or failed. As our UK MoT has been tightened up, some of the less scrupulous sellers are removing or blanking out warning lights.

A lamp check is initiated when the ignition is switched on and lasts for three seconds except for the airbag warning light which stays on for six seconds. The ABS warning light is part of this sequence.

Some lights are excluded from this check sequence such as main beam and direction indicators.
