ABS Light and CEL
My daughter has a 2001 or 2002 2.5 model with about 100K miles. Yesterday she experienced the ABS light and today the CEL also turned out. I haven't read the codes yet, but 1) Is it dafe to drive and 2) any ideas?
lyonsfin, as long as the car is driving safely and the brakes are not locking up on you, then continue to drive it. As for what your likely fault is, I would venture to guess one of the speed sensor rings in the rear wheel hubs is bad and the computer is no longer seeing the wheel speed. Checking it is fairly easy. What you will need to do is remove the wheel and then remove the ABS speed sensor on the spindle. From there you can use a flashlight to look down the hole. What you are looking for is a toothed gear near the bottom of the hole. If you don't see the toothed gear, you have your problem. Unfortunately, the fix for this is a new hub assembly. Not a hard fix, but is a little pricy if you have to pay someone to do it for you. Occasionally, it is a front wheel. So, getting the codes read may help you narrow it down to a single wheel.
Follow this link to the SNG Barratt website and you can download the parts manual for the x-type. They have good blowups and part numbers.
