Default X type braking problems

I have a 2001 x type 3.0 SE, sometimes when braking the pedal judders as if the ABS is operating. However it always seems to happen when road conditions are good i.e. no ice or rain. Also the ABS light sometimes glows orange for a while and then goes off, but strangely the light never comes on at the same time as the juddering.
I would appreciate any advice on what the problem may be. Thanks.

Alan, from our experiences with the car in question, you are looking at a failed ABS speed sensor ring in one of the rear hub assemblies. You can remove the ABS sensor from each of the rear wheels and look down inside the hole. You should see a toothed gear at the bottom of the hole. If you don't see it, then you need a new CV axle to get a new gear. If you can, find a shop that can read ABS codes and see if you can get help there to narrow things down to a single wheel. Truely it can be any one of the 4 wheels, but experience has shown about 99% of the time it is a rear wheel that is causing problems.

Thanks for the information Thermo, I wil try my local garage to see if he can read the codes.
Do you have any idea how much a CV axle would cost? And is it something that needs to be fitted by a mechanic or is it possible to do it myself?
Thanks,Alan.

Alan, a lot of members have replaced the CV axles themselves. Doesn't appear to be too hard. I haven't done it myself, so, can't give you any pointers on it.
