does it still act funny after the abs light is on?
a rusted rear abs exciter ring, will give those symptoms. typically they rust and fall off. need to change the rear outer CV jointto get a new ring. Once the abs faults.. (light on) then usually the car will drive normally except for no abs.
Could be many things.. but that has happened to many of us. I have had front abs failures too but that is rarer.
I dont have my list of codes in front of me. Ill look later on if nobody else chimes in.

The grinding is in the front left side and after the abs light comes onit also says dsc faultand the car does does drive normally.The next day the same sequence happened only this time the check engine light came up and it said gearbox fault and would not drive it only reved upto 2RPMs if that.I am going to replace the outer cv joint this weekend(seen your post on it with the pictures very helpful) do you think the gearbox fault and check engine light is due to the outer cv joint.

Ness, did you get those coded with the abs faulted or not?
Looks like the faults are not abs related, and I think if you keep the car running when the ABS is faulted... then read the codes you should get some "C" codes (chassis) that include the reason for the ABS light.
You need to know what corner to fix. The noise is the ABS reacting to a missing speed pulse, it thinks that a wheel is locked.
I think the noise is not from the corner with the bad sensor or sonsor ring, but you just hear the main ABS unit doing its thing.

well the codes are for both rear wheels...
you can see the broken pulse ring but you have to look with a flashlight with the wheel off deep in the rear hub.... turn the wheel as you look, and you wil either see the ring cracked, broken, missing a piece, or missing altogether....
If they are intact.. then the issue is out of my league.

I'm having similar issues. I pulled out of my driveway and abs kicked in when I braked to shift into drive. ABS and engine light came on with DSC FAULT message. Pulled these two codes off P1000 and C1175. Cruise control will not turn on, it runs fine other than that. I did try clearing the codes, turning the car on and immediately turning DSC off. Cruise control would then turn on and off but would not hold any speed. Soon after I got the lights back. Thoughts? Should I check both rear wheels or is this just one?

Update: On my way to work this morning the speedometer went dead. I pulled over to reset the guages, still nothing on the speedometer. I had to use GPS for speedometer. If I hit the DSC on/off my odometer changes to ------ MILES. The only way to correct this is by turning the car off and then back on. I'm thinking I have a bad speed sensor? Would that be the gremlin throwing my ABS, cruise control and speedometer off?

Sounds as though both your rear outer CV joints will need replacing to rectify this as the rear wheel speed sensors arent getting a signal from the speed sensor rings which commonly fail due to corrosion and snap/fall off.
New speed sensor rings are incorporated into the outer CV joint

Dear fellow X-Type Owner and to anyone in the US who has experienced this ABS fault and pulsating breaking issue on there X-Type, on buying a replacement REAR outer CV Joint with the reluctor ring, can anyone PLEASE point me to a seller that is both reliable and affordable on-line or someone who can ship reasonably to the state of Utah (84045 Zip Code)? Based on my web search thus far, I have only seen pricing north of the $170 range plus shipping. I own a 2002 X-Type 2.5 engine AWD with an automatic transmission and would like to replace both rear. Any insight is highly appreciated.

Online and including this site I have 4 different explanations for P1175 supposedly for X-type.
Does anyone have a JAG pdf they can post or share for X-type that has this P code in it.

Was going to change CV joint, myself with my brother. However chicken out and took it to a trusted garage. $300 dollars taxes in with oil change as well. My mechanic said he was glad I did not try it myself. Two bolts rusted in bad, even with air tools and torch. Guys said they used every tool they had in the shop.
Anyway. I have no lights on anymore, I have ABS, traction control and cruise again.
This forum was invaluable.
