Actual mileage unknown?
I saw an x-type for sale and it said the actual mileage is unknown because the instrument cluster was replaced (presumably with a used one) and therefore only reads the mileage of the car it came from. But is there any way to get at the actual mileage? I thought it was stored either mechanically or in some other computer module.
sawduster, the mileage of the car is also stored in the ECU. So, a quick trip to the dealership and if the two are different, it is going to throw up big flags. This is where they are atleast telling a partial truth. Granted, with todays laws and whatnot, that is probably a car that you don't want to get involved with, especially if your local does vehicle inspections. odds are, it is going to throw flags there too and be a real mess to get sorted out.
I'd be wondering why the shop that replaced the cluster didn't pull the mileage from the ecu and flash the cluster with it. I know that was done on mine. They're supposed to bring a whole bunch of info over, including the VIN.
