Air Conditioner, A Mind of its own

Air Conditioner, A Mind of its own
03 X-Type. It seem the climate controls have a mind of their own. 30-40% of the time when I restart the car the climate controls start in the Auto mode even though I have not left it in that mode. Also sometimes even though the ambient outside temp is in the high 70's or above and the inside of the car is much warmer the Air Conditioner compressor does not start. I have to turn off the unit completely for 1 -2 minutes restart the climate control unit then it blows nice cold air.
Does anyone know what is the cause of this problem?
Thanks

RE: Air Conditioner, A Mind of its own
I did some research on the NTSB website looking for a TSB that might be related to this problem. I found one SBN 412931 dated March 01, 2003, that I think is related but it only says A/C system inoperative reprogram electronic control module. This service bulletin replaces XT412-S931 dated 11/02.Does anyone have access to the full bulletin so I will know what it says before I go to a dealer to get it checked out and reprogrammed if necessary. Thanks,Double Tap

Hey Double tap.........if all else fails mate.
You could try sending a pm to Jagmaster. He is a Jagtech and I've found him very helpful in the past and also very knowledgable too.
I think its been some time since his last post, but, you could give it a go.
Cheers

The auto mode is just that...it's really a stupid design, but once you push the on button it assumes you want auto. If you push the AC button to turn it on, it goes into the mode you last left it.
As for the compressor not kicking on, from my experience, and I don't know why, but you have to be moving for the clutch to engage. Once it's engaged, it works fine.......

RE: Air Conditioner, A Mind of its own
On the same subject, I have a 3 month old SE and on Auto mode cold air blows out at force all the time and only from the fascia vents, but none comes out at foot level.
2 dealers have told me different stories. Can any X type drivers confirm what there's does and what mine is meant to do please?!
Thanks

RE: Air Conditioner, A Mind of its own
auto mode is
automatic temperature control
PLUS
automatic fan speed
PLUS
automatic distribution of the air
PLUS
automatic recirculation
So the answer is NO the car does not blow only out the face vents in auto. It decides based on all the sensors what is best. you can change that decision by leaving auto mode.
Normally when the outside is warmer than inside the car and you select a low set point, the face vents will be used. when you need the heater it comes out the foot and windshield vents....

What do you need to recharge your system or at least check it? I tried using a gauge my dad had for his 2001 ford f-350 as his is a 134 but the jag is too isn't it? Jags don't have a different kind of regrigerant do they? Also which line is it the one that comes out by itself or the one thats in the middle of the line...my car was having problems staying freezing cold and than today while it is 85 and a/c is truly needed especially for JR. the air stopped working all together while rolling out to my parents house! Than my cd player started skipping, the horn half worked when a guy pulled out in front of me and my door handle would barely work! Man when these quirks are happening they are all happening together! Almost ended up with a new cd player but didn't have a cd player to jam through the front of the lcd screen on the radio![:'(] Man I want to drive this thing off a cliff right now...anybody in the market for an 02 sport 3.0??? J/K I love quirks just not all at the same exact time!

Ok, on the Air...you checked the fuse right? All good?
I would check the high and low pressure (you will need guages for this) if you don't have the guages...
Another way would be to turn the air on, and visually see if the compressor kicks on (listen /watch)
If the compressor comes on you may just have low refrigerant's (R134a) Check the lines for any leakage....
Buy one of them cans and follow the instructions....most will tell you to install it on the low side (blue cap, or the bigger line of the two)
If the compressor does not come on, check the low pressure switch by grounding it out...if the compressor comes on it may just mean you don't have enough freon to build up pressure which means you have a big leak....so check the lines. If the compressor does not kick on when you ground out the switch, it may mean you have a bad compressor clutch, bad low /high pressure switch.....
Also, does the Hvac center console work? No fault codes?
good luck

RE: Air Conditioner, A Mind of its own
Hi Aquill I researched a few similar problems on other forums and came up with the following, listed below. Just a few other things to check before you lose your sanity...lol
Jim
"With Aircon on Auto and set to lowest temp, can you see the Air Con compressor drive pulley centre going round? (stand by front right hand headlight and look down the side near to bottom of engine) if you can see stationary centre then the clutch has not engaged - suspect dodgy relay R6 in power distribution fuse box on left hand side engine, give it a jiggle 'n WD40.With the engine off follow the drive belt down to the bottom air con compressor pulley, you'll see/feel the clutch fasteners around the centre boss, with the engine on shine a torch in that area and you should be able to see movement or lack thereof.
Just a thought, I had a very obscure fault on my 2002 X type 2.5 SE which gave the same symptoms.
It turned out to be a pressure transducer which had failed and was stopping the A/C compressor from operating.
It is behind the right hand side wheel arch lining, and is a schroder valve fitting.
Apparently, the nut on the compressor backs off and eventually you'll here a "clunk" under the car as you run your cutch assembly over. The AC will suddenly get warm.
Unfortunately, this means replacing the entire compressor assembly as the clutch is not individually serviceable on the older X's. I believe the updated compressor has a serviceable clutch."
