All wheel drive issues.
Hi, I have just noticed an extra whining sound when turning hard left seemingly coming from the front right wheel area ( off side in UK) and it continues for a short while while driving normally and then sound reduces and all returns to normal after going relatively straight for a while and then it all remains normal until the next hard left turn. Can anyone tell me what this might be. It doesn’t occur on hard right turns. Could it be a transmission issue or wheel bearings or what? It’s certainly a worrying sound. Thanks anyone. Jeff
Probably a wheel bearing issue.
Jack that corner up and give the wheel a spin.....you might hear a rumble or the wheel may seem to have some play in it compared to the sound and feel of the other side.
Even if it were a caliper dragging (which I would never think that would present as a whining sound), it shouldn't be variable on turning....would still point to excessive movement in bearing.
Doesn't sound much like a half shaft type of complaint....they click or crunch during tight turns under load........don't tend to whine.
Only other possibility could be front differential gearing in transmission, but rule out the wheel bearing and hub assembly first.
By the way you haven't mentioned any prior maintenance done nor how long you have had your X.....Do you know if trans fluid has been changed?
Do you know if trans fluid level is OK?
Just thinking outside the box.......if the fluid is low, the hard left turn might be sending fluid to one side. Still wouldn't think it should whine like that though.

Thanks chaps, It’s a 2006 3.0 AWD estate and I’ve had it for five years. It’s been serviced regularly but I will have to check if the transmission fluid has been changed. Service station today looked at it and ruled out bearings and brakes and asked to turn hard left and hard right while stationary with engine running. Noise occurred at each extreme indicating power steering issues. Checking fluid levels they were below dip stick and on filling the noise has stopped so we are hoping that has solved the issue. Driving home we had no noise but will see what happens tomorrow. I will let you know if it’s solved the problem. It was a horrible sound for the time it lasted and I expected it to be transmission…hopefully it’s not. Thanks again. Jeff
OK, that is hopefully good news.
PS fluid will generally create noise if it is older and has degraded - often a result of taking on some moisture which generally gives you a "strawberry milkshake" look to the fluid under load.
You might want to incorporate a PS fluid change in the next service just in case there is moisture absorbed in the original fluid. You probably want to reduce the risk of increased wear or corrosion in the steering pump and rack.
Interesting the car made the noise with both extreme left and right turns in their forecourt test but not your everyday driving.
Anyway, always a good find a simple and cheap fix to a worrying problem.

It's always a good idea to monitor all fluids and keep them up to date. For X-Type pwr. steering fluid I use ATF (Automatic transmission Fluid) Dexron III.
Don't just top up your PS fluid, replace it - it is easy - this is how I did it on my X308 - same thing on X-Type:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...change-265754/
And do not neglect any of the fluids in your AWD X-Type:
ATF
Engine oil (& filter)
Pwr steering fluid
brake fluid
transfer box oil
Diff Oil
Coolant

Thanks chaps, I will check colour of fluid and have it changed next service. We don’t use it much and have few hard rights where we live hence no noticeable right noise on the road tests. We will road test it today and see if it’s solved the problem 🤞
