Default Alternator question

Trying to find out which alternator is supposed to be in a 2002 X-Type, 2.5/automatic. According to the parts store, it should have a 100A with a clitch type pulley, but there is no clutch in the pulley of the alternator that is in the car. While the alternator will produce voltage, it will not charge with the AC on so today I broke out my newly acquired Snap On Counselor II digital scope to look at the alternator waveforms. Definitely different than my Durango (I've got the video being looked by others to confirm) with higher and lower peaks (by quite a bit).

So, what is supposed to be in the car?

The alternator fitted is determined by type of gearbox: automatic or manual.

For the automatic X400, the JLR part number is C2S3710

For the manual X400, the alternator is VIN-specific with XR822418 being superseded to C2S40072.

I have found it much easier over the years to remove the alternator, or starter, and have a local automotive electrical specialist overhaul the unit. Many of the 'rebuilt' alternators sold through the various parts houses may not fit your vehicle, or have not had the bearings, diodes or other worn parts renewed.

I don't think we have a local rebuilder anymore (used to be a guy I went to high school with back in the dark ages). I haven't had any trouble with parts store alternators, but it's also been a long time since I had to buy one. So, I'll get the one for the auto even though it looks like one from a manual is in the car.

Jim, are you sure you need an alternator? Reason I ask is generally they are pretty robust and if you are experiencing issues it might be traced to something else, like battery cables, for example. You might want to start a thread and detail the issues you are having along with any codes that might be present and someone might be able to better help you diagnose your problem.
