Right ! Looks like I've found the main problem.
Pin 1 on CA230 supplies power to the antenna. I found another yellow/green cable in the harness going to the rear of the car. I cut this and found the rear section of it is grounded, the front section is okay and has continuity with pin 1 of CA230.
I really don't relish the idea of dropping the headlining to get to the antenna though.
I've rung Jagtech and it looks like a common problem with the antennas on X type.
I've booked it in as I'm not going to even think about stripping the headlining out.
It will be a few days before I get it done.
I'll let you know how I get on with it.

The head liner is easier to drop than you think,
you just need to drop it down for access you can leave it in the car.
Good luck.
Hi
NEW PROBLEM !
I've put everything back as it was, ie instrument cluster, passenger airbag, radio/cd/aircon unit, front vents etc etc, BUT now the car won't start at all. All the lights come on on the dashboard as usual but no ignition ... like an immobilizer?
I left the yellow/green cable to the antenna cut, no ignition. Temporarily joined them, no ignition.
Aircon is not working either (is it a case of if the aircon isn't working, the car won't start?) I checked the connectors at the back of radio/cd/aircon and one was loose, reconnected but still no ignition.
HELP !!!!! PLS.
The power wire that you found shorted should go to the Antenna module which is located behind the Left hand E post trim.
You may be able to re route this cable from the plug under the back seat through the trunk up the E post. no need to remove the head liner. Or you may be lucky and find the short in the E post but I suspect you may find this module has gone bad.
The antenna module boosts the signal from the antenna which is part of the heated rear window.
Good thing you mentioned about the ariel and antenna, I could be replacing the rooftop antenna for no reason if the short could be in the antenna module.
I'd better check further before spending my money.
I'll be in touch again when I have anything to update.
I've just ordered a new antenna base ... not due to be delivered until after next weekend.
I'm hoping that by just pulling the top part of the tailgate weatherstrip down, it will allow enough room for me to replace the antenna base without stripping anything else out.
Will keep you updated.
Hi everyone, sorry for taking a while to get back in touch, things have hectic.
I finally managed to get around to replacing the antenna on the X type estate/wagon today.
There was no need to disturb the tailgate weather-seal, just had to pull the headlining out of the seal and remove the trims on the D pillars.
A 22mm spanner was required to undo the nut holding the antenna but working on this was like stripping the engine through a postbox ! All done by touch as nothing could be seen because of the headlining.
The photo below indicates the state of the antenna amplifier, was there any wonder it was shorting out.
It was a real job trying to track down the short circuit and I'm glad it's all sorted.
Many thanks for all the help from this forum.
Brad
As a footnote, anyone replacing the antenna should take great care when installing it.
It is really easy to trap the 2 cables that emerge from the bottom of the antenna base, which in my case caused another short circuit.
