Automatic gearbox gone at 40k miles :(

Hi,
I bought a 2002 2.0 X-Type back in May with 37,000 miles on the clock. Has been an amazing car and a pleasure to drive, but on Friday morning on the way to work I pulled up at some traffic lights, put the car in neutral, lights went green, put the car back into drive and nothing happened. Now when you put the car in drive there is a horrible grinding sound and it wont go anywhere. Was picked up by the AA (took 3 hours...) and ive just spoken to the garage who have said the greabox has gone completely and will cost £1800 + VAT to replace. Absolutely gutted.
Has anyone else had this happen? Is it worth me contacting Jaguar? There were no problems prior to this and there are still no warning lights or codes.
Also does that estimate sound right or am I being ripped off?

I'm sorry to hear about your transmission. I don't know if this helps butI have a 2002 X-type 2.5 automatic and when I looked at the records, the transmission was replaced from the dealer at roughly 35,000 miles. I believe it was covered by the factory warranty before I bought it.
The early X-type (2001-2003) were known for their bad design in the transmission. It was corrected from the 2004-on.
Sorry to hear about it. I would try find a gearbox out of a 2005. They seem to hold up better.
Good luck

There was a recall for the 2002 model year on the Automatic transmissions.
Have a dealer run your VIN number and see if the recall was done.
What is VAT? Is that like what we call sales tax over here across the pond?
No the manual gear boxes do not have the issues the autos do.
