The sensor(s) in the rear view mirror. The main one is on the back pointing towards the windscreen but some people have also commented that the one under the mirror glass which controls the auto dimming also plays a part for the headlights.
If I put my hand over the rear sensor my lights come on.
It might not be the sensor though, it could be the switch or any of the electrics in between.

Not if it's the switch that is faulty.
Try cleaning the switch with electrical cleaner first.

Hmm the switch, you are referring to the left of the steering wheel, the headlight control correct?

Cleaning one pair of contacts is easy. The headlight switch unit is a complex mechanical gizmo with a zillion contacts in there. It was not designed to be serviced. Just removing it from the dash is no picnic.

Consider this a challenge, not discouragement. Please post photos.

Pause and consider. Is the headlight switch at fault here? Do you really need automatic headlights? If yes, then get a used unit for $50. Then you can go gorilla on your current switch. And send more photos.

Ah great..hmm yeah I really will look and see if the switch is no good or my mirror. But if its that difficult ill probably just wait and manually turn on my lights (blah)
