I have a jaguar xtype without automatic lights and am wondering what else i would need to buy/wire if i buy the headlight switch with the automatic setting?

When you say "automatic headlights", are you referring to DRLs or do you mean the auto-on where it turns on all the lights?

The issue is if you have DRLs, then installing the lights that come on when things get dark can not be done. The wiring is physically different between the two and the DRL headlight switch does not have the connections to make the low light feature work.

If you have non-DRL headlights, then you will need to low light headlight switch and also get the associated module to wire in the light sensor.
