Smile AWD is AOK

Had another 7" to 8" of snow last nite today 4" plus 5" ice storm, on top of the 40 plus inches we already have on the ground. I had to got to bank, the roads were horrid, really horrid. But the AWD went straight and true, when I got to the bank it was closed. Banks very seldom close as there is a federal regulation that states if a bank is closed more than 3 days in one week they have to have a federal audit. Also, last nite my son had to go to his office and it was bad weather also. We got there and we had to park in the back of the building as no plows came up the street. The office complex has their own plowers they hire. The way out however was interesting. It is a 30 to 35 degree up hill road. Solid snow pack. The X went up, no wheel spin. I stopped half way up, which I would never do with a RWD or FWD car. I started up and again no wheel spin the tires dug in and away we went. I am impressed. As I said the Audi AWD I owned couldn't do that without slipin and slidin.

Plastic air scoops under the transfer case to help cool it. It's the lowest point underbody thus any traversing through deep snow will rip it off. It's $50/each. I've replaced twice on mine. Will continue to replace as I believe it's key to longevity of the transfer case - along with fluid changes.

Exactly where is the transfer case in relation to the tranny? I can't get under my car, but I am curious when the case is.

I'm glad to hear it because my X was awful in the snow but I know it's due to the crappy tires the car came with. I Just got some new tires and I'm curious how it handles now, but I'm not really hoping for more snow lol

Good snow tires and smart driving make more of a difference than AWD or 4x4 drive.

A nice bonus comes at spring time when the snow tires come off, the vehicle's owner does not have to pay the extra expense it takes to turn that AWD mechanism.
Never mind the costs to maintain the AWD system as it ages.

For this reason it is very rare to see a high mileage AWD vehicle.
