I've used VHT Niteshades before = works pretty well. Usually takes 2 coats to get a good dark tinting effect. Note that you are probably making the tail lights illegal by using the stuff, but I don't think it is a major priority for most law enforcement officers.
You can take the Niteshades off with paint thinner or mineral spirits. You'll make a nice mess, but it comes off.

ha....the lights will be ok, you'll just have black sh*t all over the place. If you do decide to take it off, I'd mask off all the areas around the lights, then try to remove with a rag dipped in kerosene first. If that doesn't work move to the harsher stuff like paint thinner.
So, if you are **** about it, you wouldn't make that big of a mess.
Of course the best option is to just leave it on there!

i am thinking about doing this to my car, i already have the side markers tinted but im thinking im going to go with vinyl since its way less permanent than the VHT. My friend used VHT on his taillights and he changed his mind a week later. he used paint thinner to remove them, but the finished product was not pretty. The paint thinner is pretty tough on plastics and can leave them rough and ugly looking. Unfortuantely he had to order new tail lights. Also another factor regarding how easily the VHT will come off is how much VHT you spray on. I would go with the vinyl which is pretty easy to do.

Good points jim. Indeed the thinner is hard on plastics. Kerosene would be a better bet to try first.
I've used thinner to get VHT off an old Saab tail light, and scraped it off with a plastic drywall knife. But that tail light was almost flat - easy to remove. I did buff it out with plastic polish and a buffing wheel and that brought the plastic finish back. Still a PITA though.
But you are right....Really if you are going to do VHT be real sure you will want to keep it.
