Question Blower Fuse - Overheating...

2002 X Type 3.0 Manual

So after I had a new clutch put in I noticed the car overheating really fast. I did most of the normal tests to determine if it was head gasket, water pump, Therm, etc... After reading a little online I see that some folks are saying to test the F8 Fuse which is the blower fuse and 80 Amp Fuse. I pulled the fuse and checked with the ohm meter and its showing 0.4 ohms of resitance, so I assume it's bad, but the odd thing is that the heater and the AC still works, even though the raditor dfan is not coming on. I put the AC into manual mode and dropped it down as far as it would go in cooling mode and still no fans. The car will overheat if its at idle for 10 to 15 minutes with coolant and water. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Curt Happy Thanksgiving BTW.

curtiz, fuse F8 (80A) is for the engine fans, not the dash blower. So, yes, the blower and A/C will still work when you pull fuse F8.

I would say to first start with getting a new fuse and putting that in. See if that changes anything. Because the fans pull a fair amount of power, it is possible that even a slight increase in resistance will cause them not to function properly. But, normally if the fuse starts to increase in resistance, it will be a sudden failure as the fuse will tend to build up heat which will lead to it opening.

I am sure this is not what you are wanting to hear, but odds are, you are looking at a bad fan controller (silver box on the fan housing next to the left side headlight). This is a known weakness of the car and has lead to many a people scratching their heads as to why it would fail.

Just a side note if you do get a new fan controller. There are 2 different styles. You have the 02-early 04 style and then you have the 2004.25 on style. They use different plugs. Both will work in your car, but if you get the 2004.25 style, then you will need to get the adapter harness to convert the plugs over.

curtizb, what do you mean about not being able to find the fuses? Do you need an electrical diagram that tells you what they are? Can't find replacement fuses at the local auto parts store?

If you need a diagram, let me know. I have one that is electronic that I will send your way.

If it is fuses that you can't find, most of them (the long, slender ones) are available at your local auto parts store as these are common to almost every car made. As for the larger square ones, go to a bigger auto parts store and they should have them on the shelves next to the other fuses. Worst case, they can special order them in for you.
