Welcome...I think for the money, the X is a great entry level Jaguar...I agree the 3.0L has appeal to me too, especially if you go for the Sport with a standard tranny[sm=gears.gif]...As far as your question to what area to pay attention to..I don't quite understand...But work the best deal and look at the options..heated seats, trip computer, Nav system, Standard stereo or the premium system..those all add up..other than that, the base models are pretty loaded as is.

Good luck..you won't be sorry..the car is phenominal in Ice and snow.

All cars have their inherent problems and quirks..especially British Cars..The 2002 MY of the X type was the first year and had most of the problems..since then Jaguar has addressed them and most of the later MY versions have been pretty darn reliable....I wouldn't hesitate a minute to buy a later MY X right now.

Thanks. What i was saying is that is there a common issues or troublesome areas of the vehicle I need to pay attention to?
Hi Adrian, a lot will depend on what year you go for

My (02) one of the early models I have been quite lucky with, however, some of the issues are as follows.
As with many new models, the X-type had a few 'bugs' associated with the initial model year, including:
[ul]Leaking/dripping washer jets
Defective boot latch
Faulty J-gate selector
Vibration issues (Sometimes poor tires/balancing, sometimes a prop-shaft problem)
Faulty drivers door latch
"Squeaky" rear seat
Faulty Thermostats, resulting in "High Engine Temperature" warnings
Weak center arm rest
Dash vents - pop up [/ul]
Most of these quirks have now be corrected under warranty and shouldn't be a problem if you are looking at an early X-type.

For 2003, the X-type was provided without most of the problems found in the initial '02 models. Besides the better quality build, there was not much new included w/ for the 2003 models .

2004 > pretty much all good Adrian

Good luck and keep us informed

Jim

The first X Type I drove/saw when looking was a 3.0 Sport manual.I then travelled half way around the country trying others but went back to the 1st one as it had the better engine and Cranberry.
No probs with mine other than ABS speed sensor corroded and fell off.
Good luck.
[EDIT...PS Mines a 2002]

Hey adrian you can get navi for the car yourself with a better unit yes. Upside is the factory one looks sweeter but you will pay for it. You can pretty much guarantee spending anywhere from 500-1500 more for one with navigation because they generally have every possible thing that make the value go up like 18's instead of 16's or 17's...Me personally I'd rather have an aftermarket head unit and go from there. I get pioneer avic d3's for 750 with bluetooth, you'd be hard pressed to get all of that for less on the car you are looking for...Go sport for sure you won't be upset you did! Being in Minnesota I'd say find one either that is sport or has dsc (dynamic stability control) its a button in front of the cupholder near the shifter. It has a car swerving as an illustration on the button. With the dsc the car pretty much cannot do anything...it keeps you driving straight even if you have the gas pedal to the floor. Although ice cannot be corrected!

I'd agree with everyone here as well. My '04 X 3.0 AWD is my first Jag and I love it. Besides being having a super comfy ride, the car seems to be super reliable. In my humble opinon, it's a great entry level Jag. Go for it...you won't be sorry.

Thats good to hear beelab but wait until something does go wrong...[:@]j/k hopefully nothing does!
Honestly though the parts to fix it aren't too bad. I checked on a front control arm (lower front passenger) and it has the ball joint and the whole part from local jag dealer in Novi, MI was only 225...

Ummm.....I don't know how old this post is....didn't look.
X-Type is decent entry level car. If you buy one, get it at the dealer, and definitly get Select Edition warranty. Tranmissions are known for going out. Made by JATCO. Anyway, select is well worth the extra money you will pay. Covers everything but interior trim items and anything rubber pretty much. No brakes either. It will pay for seals though. So the IMT seals that leak on X-Type will be covered for example. $16,000 for an 04 sounds about right depending on options. Also.....did I mention, get the Warranty? Trust me....even though some things you will have to pay diag for, if you need a trans, will be free to you, but if no warranty.....maybe $8000? I cant remember off the top of my head, but expensive. Get the car though.....fun in the snow for sure.

My stupid dash vents still pop up. I take it to the dealer and they fix it and then it comes back like 2 months later. I gave up. I'll have rattling dash vents. I have a 2003 purchased in 2002.

Overall love the car. It's slow, but I put some nice performance tires on it and the car became much more fun to drive. The car was a high school graduation present to me from my parents. So I don't complain. I think I'm the only kid i've ever met that drives a Jag so I'm happy. Good to be unique. I love it more than anything. Spend hours detailing it during the warmer months. Car is always clean. Jaguar's silver is still amazing. It has so much depth compared to BMW and even benz.

U will love the car. I advise getting a 3.0 and get stick if u can.

Hey masterdeep
Re the vents still popping up...lol

There is a known cure for this from the dealer, newbrackets or sumthin, cant quite remember, but it does / should work. Some other members have stuck theirs down with super glue which seems to work also but is maybe a bit radical. Dont suffer them as they can be fixed.
Either ask the dealer again or contact FactoryJagtech

Ok thanks Jim. I'll check it out. I'm out of warranty though. So I don't want to pay a lot for this. But i'll check it out. They replaced the pins that hold the vents down like 4 times during warranty. Started sounding a bit now when going over really rough streets.

You want a 2003 or later 5 speed manual, Sport model if you can get it, get it certified with warranty. I would try to get under or around 30 000 miles if you can find it. I found many richpeople bought the X-Type as a second car and did not like the five speed so they never drove them? Most people in the US like automatics??? So foloowing what i said, thenget in and drive away with one of the best cars on the road.

The dealer replacement dash ventshave beenmodified, supposed to cure the problem, or you can stick down your old ones.
