Default A/C Compressor Issues

Hello All!

I was checking things out on the underside of my X this weekend and discovered a leak in the A/C compressor. I'm very familiar with compressors, so I was wondering if it's something that can be repaired or if I might need a new compressor.

Thanks!

Lovely.
I had the same problem. I replaced the compressor. It's the quickest, easiest way.

My Jaguar service tech said my compressor has a slight leak (2007 - 96K miles); rather than change it out now I am trying A/C Pro recharge/sealant. Too soon to tell if it will buy me more time, but seems to have made a big difference so far. (BTW, I live in Florida so I'm in a perfect proving ground for this!) Good luck.

Pacobell - thanks for the heads-up! What kind of difference have you seen exactly? I.e. - cooling better, less leakage, etc.

To add my $0.02 here - the first pic looks like the leak is from where the two halves of the compressor are bolted together or from the clutch seal - in either case - the compressor should be replaced as at this point - with that kind of leak - the compressor oil is more than likely gone and the internals will just chew themselves apart.

In the second pic - if this was the only leak you had - you could change the O-Ring seal - only $11 - but again, you have a major leak as I stated above.

Finally, those seal kits would not work in a situation like yours and I for one wouldn't trust letting that stuff into the AC system - more trouble than what it's worth.

Agreed.

And I don't ever EVER use that seal leak stuff. I did once and had to pull the system apart later anyway (cause it didn't seal anything). That was the biggest frappin mess to try to clean that stuff out of there.

ccash, the cold air coming out seems normal but I don't expect this to be a permanent fix at all, just "buying time" before I shell out the $$$ for a new compressor. I will report back when I notice the a/c cold becoming warm.

abonano, Brutal, AlfaVeloce, and Pacobell - thank you all very much for your responses. Looks like I'll be needing to replace this soon.

I noticed the issue when I was underneath the car to see what it would take to perform the Compressor Valve Spring Modification, since my A/C isn't cold while stopped. Have any of you replaced your own compressor? Is it worth trying to do myself?

its not bad but definitly easier on a lift and you have to evacuate the system freon and then vacuum and recharge. Do have the tools

Brutal,

I don't have a lift, nor the tools for evacuating, vacuuming, and recharging the A/C system. I guess the trick for me will be finding a shop that will use parts I provide. Is it wise to replace the drier at the same time? Anything else that I should replace?

you can get a flush system you put to a 150 psi compressor for 50 bucks at granger. Guages at Harbor freight for 50 bucks. A vacuum pump is several hundred. Got all the parts at discount ac dot com for about 300 bucks. The compressor comes out easy if you have ramps to drive up on. You'll have to make some extensions for the ramps to clear the body. The orifice tube isn't too bad if you cut a wrench in half so you can turn it off and clear obstructions. Take the wheel well liner before you drive up the ramps as you need to turn the tires away from screws to get them off. The accumulator comes off easy. My tranny pan has a slight leak. I need to replace the gasket, looks easy if the battary comes out. I found a stripped tranny pan bolt. I never used a heli coil on aluminium, is there a special kind?

Yes 2.5 and 3.0 both use the same compressor.
