Default A/C problem

I have a 2002 3.0 X-type. It's having a problem with the A/C but I am unsure of what it is as I have heard of multiple problems dealing with the A/C. It all started out with the A/C blowing out hot air when set to cold. Then I noticed a noise around the right front wheel but ignored it. After awhile of driving like that I noticed a smell of burning rubber and next thing I know the belt snapped so I had no power steering. I replaced the belt but it snapped once again. I've heard about several problems dealing with the A/C, but would the belt snapping have to do with a bad pulley? Or is it a different problem? Anybody else experience this and would be able to help explain what's wrong?

Howdy,
Its highly likely you have a A/C compressor problem or faulty A/C compressor clutch ?

In any event the drive pulley on the A/C compressor is not working as intended and so, that has caused the drive belt to fail. Sounds like you need to get the compressor checked. (probably replaced)

If so, that will mean a new A/C Dryer/Receiver will need to be installed along with the new compressor. Yep, that will set you back a few hundred bucks - probably closer to a grand all up.... when labour and regas costs are included.

If you want to get the best price on the replacement parts (as a Kit) then go here;

Then you can shop around for a local installer. (nope, its not a DYI project)

Larry, I agree with your diagnose but I will have to disagree with it being a DIY job.

Once you have the refrigerant profesionally removed, its a basic DIY to replace compressor and fill up with refrigerant. See link to S Type DIY:

Hi Rick,
We can agree to disagree on the DIY aspects of the A/C work.

Specialist equipment and experience is required for some of the procedures to recover existing gas, install some of the replacement parts, evacuate the system, regas the system and do leak tests. etc....

I don't believe our man is up to this or even remotely interested in doing it.

Just my two cents....

So I ordered the kit on eBay for only about $367. Other than the kit, a new belt, and freon are there any other parts I would need?

Wow thats alot of money. I found an OEM compressor on ebay for $115.00ish. Total job minus the belt was less than $200.00.

Some will say to replace the dryer and expansion valve. I did not.

What is all included with the kit?

Well... mate, if you want any sort of warranty on the Compressor the RECEIVER /DRYER must also be replaced (hence they sell the kit)
Check out the ebay link given above .... then onto the Sellers store for precise info on what constitutes the 'Kit'

Hey nckbudd,
You need to find and arrange for an A/C Technician to install the kit you are supplying to him. He will have all the necessary and other 'odds and sods' to complete the installation for you. If he knows the X-Type car, installation should take about 4-6 hrs and his charges made accordingly.

I'm about to do this job in a few weeks. Local shop quoted me almost 2000$(Oakland labor rates are kinda high). The mechanic did caution me that non-OEM hoses tent not to fit all that well, but once I told him I work with HVAC and large chillers, he said it's an easy enough job.

I do have a few questions
1. should i get a serpentine belt removal tool?
2. evacuate, remove, install, pull vacuum, charge... did i miss anything?
3. anything I should do while i'm there? 2002 x 3.0 almost 80k miles...
