Default Car Stinks After Rain

02 X-Type. I've had the car over a year and never had this before. Now, if the car is parked during a heavy rain shower, the next day it stinks, and the carpet on the front passenger side is damp. This suggests a leak, but anyone have any ideas what could cause this sudden leak?

I also have a stinky ac system, but that is a seperate problem that I think I have a solution for: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/heati.../aa071601a.htm

There maybe be a leak on the door- Check the seal on the inside of the door- Water might be leaking thru there- Fix that fax before it start eating the floor with rust.

x-types sitlower in the front, which would cause water to flow towards the front of the car and sit

Have your A/C condensate drain checked for blockage..Rain will enter through the hood vents sometimes if wind blown just right, and collect in the evap box like the A/C waterwould do..if the drain is plugged it will leak out on your floor board...hence the mildew smell of wet carpet, etc.

All door seals seem fine, and the dampness is actually by the passenger's left foot, not near the door.

The AC condensate drain seems to be working fine too. I see the usual stream under the car when using the ac while standing. Still, I think there may be something to this. I will take out the pollen filter and celan out whatever leaves and stuff maybe down there.

have a sunroof by chance. How is the drain for that? I know when I lived in washington State, it was common for the drain lines to get plugged. That will cause the sunroof void to fill with water and then leak into the vehicle (flows under headliner to A-pillars, through the dash and then on to the floor). I found the easiest way to normally clear the drains is to get one of the keyboard cleaning cans of compressed air. I then would build up the tip with some masking tape so the end of the straw is a little bigger than the drain opening. You then simply squirt the compressed air into the drain opening. I then would follow this up with running about 2 quarts of water through the drain tube to flush anything remaining out. Don't use an air compressor as the pressure from this is much higher and can cause damage to the drain line itself (ie, cause it to rupture).

Like others have said, based on where hte water is, I would be checking the A/C drain line.

Yes, I have a sunroof. I'll try that. Sounds interesting. I hope it works. Thanks.

In addition to checking the pollen filter - make sure the plastic cowl is staying down tight against the windshield. If it pops up, like on my car, rain water can soak the pollen filter and drip in the car through the air vent behind it. It's happening on my 06 because the plastic cowl pops up about a 1/2 inch off the windshield. Car goes to the dealer tomorrow to get it fixed - again.

Thanks for that. I will try to put on my mechanic hat this weekend. I have spoken to the dealer and they also mentioned the drain lines, but I'll check the pollen filter, drain lines, and the plastic cowl too.

If the cowl is popped up - have the mechanic be careful trying to snap it back down. The mechanic at the Jag Dealer got a little heavy handed trying to snap mine back down and cracked the windshield. Now the dealer has to replace the cowl and the windshield. Oh well - at least they're paying for it.
