Default Catalytic Converter

Hi, My engine warning light came on my 2002 X Type Jag, it has been diagnosed as needing a new front Cat converter, as anyone had the same problem? is this something i need to take to Jag mechanic or is it something i can take to a good muffler shop or even have a non Jag mechanic deal with? i have had the car two years and find Jag mechanics to charge an arm and a leg. I appreciate any and all feed back.

Thx,

Graham

Any competent mechanic can change a catalytic converter. Why are you convinced it is the converter. What was the code when the check engine light came on. There are some steps you can try to save the converter.
Depending on the particular Pcode it could be an O2 sensor.
Post the code and we can try to advise.

Avern1, Thx for the info. I was told by a Jag mechanic that I need a new CAT, however, after I made the post last night I went to O'Reilly's auto parts and they came up with code P0420 which indeed is an H02 sensor, bank 1 im led to believe the X Type has 2 bank 1s and 2 bank 2s how would i know which bank 1 maybe causing me the problem or, should go ahead and change both bank 1s? Thx

Have all the other tests "run" or do some show as "not completed" ? Reason I ask is that my CAT efficiency test would not complete along with EVAP and many opined that at 95,000 miles I might have bad converters (especially since it is a California Low Emission Vehicle requiring 90% efficiency to complete) Turned out that I had a bad Purge Valve, and that after replacing it the EVAP "completed" and then in short order the CAT efficiency completed. Certainly replacing the O2 sensors is first (I used Bosch primary wideband O2 and they worked fine btw).
