Click = Starter. At least that's been the problem in every other car i've owned that had that issue.

I'm sure you'll get some concrete answers in a bit from the resident gurushere. These guys have saved me at least $500+ already

First thing, ur sure you have gas in the tank right?

Ate the starter plugs in properly where they are touching the fuel.

I would be inclined to go with starter, too. Pull it off and take to your local parts house. They can bench test it.

replace the batt. when negative cable is corroded is because the batt. is crack, happens all the times with xtype, just recently
work on an xtype, no start, gear box fault message. just a batt.

I'm having the same issue with a `03 X-Type. Once out of every three weeks or so out of the blue it just clicks when I try to start. Lights inside flash with the clicking. If I jump the starter solenoid with a screwdriver it cranks right over, but then still won't crank with the key. Battery passes a load test holding 10.5v for 10 seconds under load. But if I put on the jumpers, or battery charger to the battery it cranks right up. Is 10.5v not enough for the car's electronics?
Thanks for any responses.

Rukee, sounds like to me that the starter solenoid is toast and needs replacement. The solenoid has developed a high resistance connection that only gets hit once in awhile. That leads to the solenoid dropping too much voltage and limiting the current going to the starter itself. This causes the starter to attempt to roll the engine, but doesn't have enough guts to actually roll it over.

But then why does it roll right over if I jump the solenoid?

Most likely voltage drop through the negative cable and a weak battery. The flashing lamps say the battery is low and affecting the electronics. I would replace the battery and negative cable.

I've done exactly that, replaced the battery and the neg cable and so far no more issues.
Thank you verry much Real_Tech.
