Hi there, greetings from San Juan, Puerto Rico. I have a 2005 Jaguar x type 3.0 L with 93, 245 miles perfect condition. Suddenly this morning I saw the temerature gauge not moving, it was working ok. Where should I start?

Could it be your thermostat is stuck and the car is not reaching operating temperature? I would say the CTS is bad, but that throws a code in my experience.

 

Robert, we can prove if it is the instrument cluster or another problem with the car. Lets start with the easy checks. What I want you to do is to get into the car and before you start the car, press and hold down the TRIP button. With the TRIP button depressed, start the car. Keep the TRIP button depressed until you see the info center say "Engineering TEST". At this point, release the TRIP button. You have now put the instrument cluster into diagnostic mode. It is going to do a lot of interesting things as you push the trip button, so, don't freak out, this is all normal. If you momentarily press the TRIP button one more time, you should see all the gauges sweep full left, then sweep full right, back to full left, then back to current indications. During this sweeping, does the temp gauge sweep across the whole range of motion. If no, then your instrument cluster has a failure and odds are, you are looking and needing to get a new instrument cluster to get your temp reading back.

Assuming that the temp gauge swept like it should have, you are now going to press the TRIP button another 20ish times (should be 24, but based on year of car and options, may vary slightly). What you are looking for is the info center to say "XXXX C" where XXXX is going to be 4 digits (if you get here within a few minutes of starting the car, you should see something like "0500 C" which means that the ECU is seeing the coolant temp at 50.0 C. With the car running normally, you should see the temp indication rise to roughly 95-98C and hover there (0950 to 0980 C as seen on the cluster). If you see the temp rise, but the guage remains on the low peg, then you have an issue with the instrument cluster.

If your instrument cluster is saying "---- C", then this is telling you that most likely your temp sender is bad. You can confirm this by using a multimeter and disconnecting the plug at the temp sender. If you are getting a reading of a few hundred ohms (car up at temp), this is normal. Kinda like it may be as high as 6000 ohms with the motor very cold. Good resistance, then the sender is good and the wiring is your problem. If it is reading less than 100 ohms or more than 10,000 ohms, then your sender is bad.
