Default Crankshaft Oil Seal

I've been in and out of AAMCO for about 6 months now after my transmission rebuild. The last time I took it in (a couple weeks ago) was to have them address something that was leaking fluid onto the exhaust pipe, causing a foul odor inside the car. They replaced the "front pump seal" in the transmission but mentioned that my crankshaft seal needed to be replaced as well. Due to my past experiences there, I didn't believe them and told them to just do the transmission work that was under warranty.

Now a few weeks after this repair I'm still smelling something burning, it's only noticeable when stopped after driving for a little while. The problem is, I can't tell by the odor alone what the source of the leak is. At this point it wouldn't surprise me if the transmission is not fixed 100%, but I would hope that at this point it actually is just the crankshaft seal.

If anyone has had the crankshaft seal replaced in their car, how much should I expect to pay? Also, if anyone has an idea of how to pinpoint this leak I would like to hear it as well

When the transfer box is overfilled or when the righthand side drive shaft seal leaks - and it's not easy to differentiate between the two! - the oil drips on the exhaust and has a distinctive smell, noticeable only when you stop.

The transfer box should have 550 to 600 mls of oil, noting that if drained through the 'drain' plug, (nearly half way up the box!) 250 mls will be left inside. That situation sometimes leads to there inadvertently being 800 to 850 mls that then blows out of the vent on top of the box until the level drops to about 650/700 mls.

Trying to prove where the leak is can be awkward! Note though that engine oil, t'box oil and tansmission oil all smell very different to each other! You need to get under and wipe everything as clear of oil as you can, then keep going back to try and find the source! Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I guess my main question here is would a leaking crankshaft seal cause the same effect as an overfilled transfer case? I was told by AAMCO that they found the leak in the transmission and corrected it, but the crankshaft seal was also leaking.

Also, forgive my ignorance, but would removing and reinstalling the transmission call for refilling the transfer case? Obviously they had to refill the transmission but I wasn't sure if they had to do anything with the transfer case during that process.

Does the transmission vent fluid too if it is overfilled? I wouldn't put it past them to have overfilled it.

Maybe I'll go to another shop and ask them to determine if my crankshaft seal is actually leaking
