Are you not getting the CEL (check engine light)? The "cruise not available" simply means your X has gone into fail safe or limp mode, restricting the performance (limiting your RPM, etc) but allowing you to "limp" home or to your nearest Jag service tech. You should be getting a CEL and need the codes read to see what system is having a problem. How can you have a RED indicator showing for months and just now get it checked out? Or was I mis-reading that part?
