To clarify a bit
the DRL law was here in Canada since 1990.
It is based on studies that show a reduction in accidents. Same as why motorcycles must always have their lights on. There is no provision for people's emotions or feeling or coolness on this one. It is statistically proven to be safer, and therefore put into law. All you nay sayers can go back to stats class before you argue.
I can assure you that there is no measurable change of life of headlight bulbs. I cant even remember changing a headlight bulb in years .
Aquill... shame on you living so close to the border and not even having heard of this. it has been the law here for 17 years.. !!!! lol you need to get out a bit more.
Any car imported into Canada must have DRL installed.
So I assume the new guy is importing a car to Canada.. I am surprised that he cant spell Canada . wtf is with Kanada.. that is German spelling but any sane minded German would never buy an X type... not sure what the deal is there.. And dont we have immigration laws here. As a Canadian that come from a background from before Canada was a county I would hope that the minimum that Immigration Canada does is show people how to spell the name of Canada.. sheesh!!!
now the DRL law is for forward facing light visible during daylight at some distance.
Automakers have choice on how to do this.
Some add special lights
Some run the high beams on half brightness ( bulbs in series )
Some just turn on all the lights front and rearand dash lights on low beam
Some cars you need to physically turn the switch on at night in order to activate using high beams
Some cars the switch has no effect ( like the JAG )
On our cars, when you turn the key to ingition position the low beams come on and all the other lights including the dash lights. This totally sucks because that forces the Navigation screen to low brightness all the time. There is no way around this. you need to change the screen brightness manually all the time.
I have wondered how other cars work with the 3 brightness settings.. there is day, night and twilight.. but none of that works automatically on a Canadian car.

WTF???? Actually I don't need to get out more...I drive with my lights on irregardless usually but I sure as heck don't want to go to Canada or care to know what your laws are! Why would I care what your driving laws are...thats just like saying I should study what you guys say about emissions just because you guys made a different law!!! I agree that lights help out and all and they are safer and I always rode with, not just my lights on on, my bike but with the brights on as well...that probably isn't a good idea either but its safer for me...so sounds like if you didn't have that law you'd get around doing that doesn't it bo???

I cant believe how absolutely typical that response was from an American. I dont know you from a hole in the wall and maybe you have travelled a lot. But you do live in an internationalborder city, and so many people would be jealous of the opportunities you have. Also Detroit is in a state of decline because the American auto business has not built cars that the world want to buy, all part of the problem with living in a solitary world.
SO, actually it is hilarious.
Most people WANT to learn about other countries and their customs and cultures...most people take an interest in their neighbours. There is something funny about americans that they just want to live in their own bubble. Even the fact that you drive with high beams on.. blinding others... just to benefit yourself -it all fits the typical profile.
Sitting here on Saturday morning having a coffee.. I am thinking it would be so nice to drive to the border and have a good old BOB EVANS american breakfast. I do love so many things about the USA (and more all the time as our dollar strengthens).But alas.. I have to head to Toronto which is 2 hours in the other direction.

Sorry Bo, haven't been lambasted like that for a spelling error since sixth grade. lol. Fourth generation Canadian and wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world!!!!!! All I wanted to know is if the auto feature is available with daytime running lights or do I have to live without them. Dealer said to put my American switch in after inspection. What a stupid idea. I want the added safety of the DTR and the convenience of auto headlamps.

Hi guys,
Just bought an 05 X-type Sport(manual) and imported it into Canada.I had to have DRL's installed in order to be able to license it here.The dealer simply changed the 4 position headlight switch that the car came with to a 3 position switch.In doing so I lost the auto on feature for the headlights but the dealer said there was no way around it.Canadian cars with DRL's typically have only the low beam lamps on (no other lights on) and the headlamps are at a lower volatge (dimmer) than when low beam lamps selected to "on".My car's low beam headlamps are the same brightness whether in DRL mode or the "on" position and all the lights(low beam headlamps,side marker lights,and tail lights)are on in DRL mode.I would rather have only the low beam lamps on.Is there any way to do this?

Hey bo to tell you the truth (not kidding either!) I hate driving in Canada...Toronto is a living nightmare...in a mere 1/10th of a mile there were 3 accidents...the people drive so horribly it isn't funny...I hear people complain about drivers these days and how fast they want to push others down the road...ha in Canada there is no pushing...there is no shoving only accidents and the most errogant drivers ever! Hey bo did you know that in California it is illegal for a car to drive faster than 60mph without a driver? It's imperative that you should know that![:@]
So really there is no reason to go to Canada other than my whole other half of my moms family lives there...Oh wait that is still not a good enough reason to cross that border![>:]

Put a black piece of tape over the sensor. Unnoticeable and the lights would turn on with the car and turn off with the car. The safety of DRL is there and so is the convenience of the auto feature. Tape...$1. Camera to show us what you did...$100. Gas to buy these things...$3. The safety of DRL...priceless. There are somthings that money can't buy. For everything else there are moderators.

Yeah hanky they are your rear fog lights...they are very handy and very bright when you are driving in the fog...the extra lights put out mad light so cars behind know you are there...
