Decision making is so hard...
Hey everyone, I'm selling my '93 XJ6 this spring as I've had it for a few years now. For the past year I've been debating whether to buy the last year of production 1997 XJR, which is gorgeous and has my bulletproof motor in it still, plus I like it much more than the issues my dad's 2000 XJR had. OR sell my Jag and Jeep to buy a 2004-2005 X-Type that I can use year round here in Buffalo? I've done a ton of research on the X-Types but I just cant force myself to buy a Jag that is pure Ford. If I do buy one it will be without a doubt a 3.0 and possibly the Sport Package.
Any perks to owning an X-Type? I've yet to drive one and would like to know how reliable the AWD is especially, along with general comments about the car. My XJ6 gets comments everytime I open the door but there are just so many X-Types on the road today. I've always been used to having a Jag for a summer car and a 4WD Jeep for the winters. Selling my XJ6 is hard enough let alone deciding which Jag I want next!! Thanks in advance for any tips, etc.

Haha I'm not going to lie I cracked up when I read that myself...smartassss. I'm only selling it because I've ALWAYS wanted an XJR. Especially since the XJR6 is more reliable than the V8 models. I just like the newer bodystyle going back to the quad headlights. Mine lacks a sunroof, heated seats, and speed. ALL of which I want. = ) Otherwise I love it and would keep it. It's in perfect condition and I've done a lot of mechanical work as well as extras to it (got pics in gallery). I only consider the X-Type because I do love it inside and out plus it will solve my problem of maintaining and insuring 2 cars since its AWD and I'll use it year round. It's just a pain because I'm in my 3rd year of college and over the last few years Ive gone through 3 different Cherokees (all of which I loved) buying and selling working my way up to having a nice winter Jeep too. The one I have now is in perfect condition but I'm at the point where I want everything my Jag has for the winter too!

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
ok now to answer your question:
I love my x-type. I think it is a great car however, if I were you I would honestly buy an XK or something like that and put snow tires on it. Here is the thing you have to remember, the Jaguar X-Type was built with one idea in mind….. Well two ideas. First, to compete with the BMW 3, Audi a4, and Mercedes C-class. Second, it was made to attract a new type of consumer. The kind that don’t have 100k to drop on new car. To get them into the Jaguar brand and hopefully move them up the ranks of cars Jaguar has to offer. I honestly believe that Jaguar did not think someone would buy one new and keep it for 15 years. You see, the car is an entry level car but the maintenance is not entry level. It cost almost just as much as any other Jag to maintain. Things rattle and vibrate in some X-Types, they have a weak transfer case design, and these things that can become frustrating for a consumer may push them away from the Jaguar brand. You can get a great XK for 20k.that is a good deal and with the snow tires you will be fine. I live in Cleveland, it snows here… a lot and I have driven an XK with snow tires on it… it drove great. Now with all this stuff I said it may sound like I don’t like the X-Type but, I do. I own one and I love the car. I am just giving you a new perspective. If you still want an X-Type let me know. I have a guy that can find you a good deal on one that has been very well maintained, either way keep us updated. Whatever you do stay away from BMW and Benz.

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
Thank you for some of your advice on the X-Type ownership. I unfortunately dont have 20K do drop on a XK even though I'd take one any day of the week! I'd be spending in between 7-9K on a '97 XJR or sell my jag and jeep to buy a '04 X-Type. It's one or the other considering I'm still a colleg student. I wouldnt drive an XJR in the winter having done that with my dads for a winter and with my XJ6 for the first few months I owned it because I had no other choice. RWD just isnt my cup of tea for the snow after having now been spoiled with 4WD Jeeps for the last few winters and this is why the decision is tough. And I agree with ya on Bimmers & Benz, not a huge fan. If anything my other choice for one year round car would be a 2001 Audi S4 I've always liked those too. But hey I havent even sold my Jag yet anyways so I'll be aiming for the middle of March for that so I have money to rock and roll when I find a XJR or X-Type!

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
(reply to fastjaguar) I definitely hear ya on the decreased value no doubt about that. Which is why and being a Ford I am still 99% leaning toward keeping the Jeep for the winter and selling my jag to get the XJR. Jags are a hate it or love it relationship and I personally love Jaguars. Theres just something about em. Dont get me wrong I am quite impressed with German cars too. I had a '85 380 SEL long ago and my dads got a '98 750 iL Bimmer...and I MUST say that vehicle is amaazing...the V12 is to die for...But thats why I've always considered the Audi S4 too theyre really great cars. I guess I'm just not ready to give up the summer car/winter car thing yet is all. As far as modifying I'm not really into that so much. The much I've done to my Jag is rims, tints, and system, wouldnt plan on doing anymore to anything else either

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
hey XjJagXJJeepDriver,
My favorite car was a 95 jeep wrangler rio grande. I still miss the thing sometimes. but my X-type is 77 times awesomer (i invented that word).
If you look through the posts i have typed, i have had some rough time with my xtype. The build quality is not as great as their flagship XJ or even XK. sheeeeet rattles, squeaks, MINE WHINES AND MOANS,
but darn it the thing is a beast in the snow and looks so dang sexy. i love watching people slip, slide, spin out while i track straight and true at any speed i want. just today i had to take of from a stop light, (long story), in a snow storm here in chicago, i punched it almost full pedal, i didnt even fish tail or stray a bit!!!!!!!!!!
yes the sound system sucks meatballs, and i have the alpine upgrade system. yes the auto aircon heat unit is insanely horrible, the thing always blow at full blast. 191 bhp not that impressive, andyes the MPG isnt great either.
but the grip, the looks, the wood, the leather, the sound at 4000 rpm, the leaper on the hood, and knowing you own a car that you dont see on the road like a ford taurus (mondeo or focus for you euro peeps).
if you go with one car you will pay less on insurance, taxes, and registrations.
i hope that helps a bit.
anymore questons jusk ask bro.

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
Whats up housegroove77.
Thanks for some of your own personal experience with your X-Type. Sounds like it is in fact a fun car to own and is actually reliable in the snow too which I really wanted to know! But at the same time it has its own annoying problems like any other car huh? You think some of the stuff you've dealt with has anything to do with the difference of it being the 2.5 model compared to the 3.0? Cuz the 3.0 would be the one I'm interested in
Other than that your def right about the fact that theres nothing quite the same as a Jag out on the road...I've yet to see a car that has a bodystyle that's that impressive and that recognizable (besides the '79 Ferrari I want) hahah. Nothing is better for me either to look down at my hood while cruisin and see the Jag leaper... = )

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
hey xjjag, your snow in buffalo is way different than the rest of us in ohio, illinois and michigan. Chances are you guys get feet at a time not inches correct? If this is the case and it takes a day or more to clear the x-type does have issues with snow. Once the short belly of the car rests on some snow no matter what tires you have on it the car simply cannot move. Don't get me wrong I love the car and its capability but keep in mind that the jeep you speak of could make it in 2ft+ deep snow...If you do get an x make sure you get one with dynamic stability control (standard on sport) and keep in mind it isn't a huge car. Being a college student you shouldn't have too much holding you back as far as needing more space so the x is a good choice. I as well want a xjr or stype r but the x for winter driving is the best choice. If you go with 04 there weren't quite as many problems with the car and you go 05 your even more in the clear, not to mention warranty, keep your eyes open there are deals on these cars allover the place so don't just see one price tag and say that isn't cheap enough because you will find the right price.

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
Oh wait...u live in Buffalo...nvm I retract my previous statement. You need AWD and snow tires. For me in chicago, I think it snows like 10x a year and roads are cleaned pretty fast when the awd is useful in snow. So I am going with RWD and snow tires next time. But aquill is right on the ground clearance. You may need a suv if you do get several feet of snow at a time.

Re: Decision making is so hard...
Well, XjJagXJetc, my two cents.... I have a 1999 XJR with >100K miles on it (owned since new) - utterly reliable and nothing but routine stuff to date (and it has spent MANY hours at triple digits on rural Western US Interstates. Best, most reliable car I have ever owned, and I still look over my shoulder and smile at it every time I park and walk away But, it is truly useless in snow. Any snow. 40-series tires and snow do not mix.
I also have an Audi A6 - a true snowmobile of the first order, but it has had MANY repair issues and recalls since new, countless niggles all its life. Having said that, it has 130K miles and drives great, but not exactly Mr Reliable.
I have driven S4s of various ages - a blast to drive - even more fun than the XJR, but no panache, very low ground clearance, and definitely need snows on all four wheels (see above about low-profile tires and snow).
All in all, it sounds to me like you are in the best of all possible vehicular situations for your needs right now! Count your blessings, keep what you have, and save your coin to keep the XJ (s) in great shape.
Cheers!

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
Thanks guys for the last few posts! that was really helpful info, especially about ground clearence and such when it comes to the snow...cuz YEA..Buffalo, is like a climate all by itself. We always get blasted at least a few times over the winter where were talking more than 2 feet at a time. I live in the southtowns of buffalo, which our main road drives right along the lake and I must say as quick as our plows work they cant keep ALL the roads clear at all times! haha. And Markus I def know what you're talking about with the XJR in the snow..driving my dads 2000 was a nightmare unless you were extra careful, but the power in that car just made it all around dangerous for winter I dont care if you have Hummer tires on it!
I think I have def come to a conclusion that as much as I love the X-Type I'm still into the older Jags more and will either stick with my XJ6 one more summer but more than likely sell it in a couple months, buy a '97 XJR6 that I want and still have my Jeep for winter. = ) I'll keep in touch with everyone here since my moms always wanted an X-Type too..haha
I wish I lived out west or down south where ALL my problems would be solved as there'd be no need for a second 4WD vehicle for winter. Matter a fact I just had a though that I could keep my XJ6 and have the XJR too...2 awesome year round cars...but not in Buffalo! I plan on moving after I graduate so maybe that wil take me somewhere warm!

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
Yeah hopefully moving will solve that! I'm moving to Texas and will probably get rid of the x but not because I won't need awd but because I need a larger vehicle! I look forward though to being able to get some chrome wheels and a nice RWD vehicle and be able to drive it year round!
The ground clearance is the only hinderance to you getting one as I stated as that is the only problem. If you lived in chicago the car would be awesome or here in Michigan but I know you guys get pounded with snow so the snow capability you saw with your jeep wouldn't compare at all! Don't get me wrong though the x is a very capable car but not once you near the foot or more of snow mark! Perhaps even less than that! You don't like the newer xj's?

RE: DECISION MAKING IS SO HARD...
Ha yea thats the only thing I was really worried about was the ground clearencewith the X...but hey I do love Jeeps! I love pretty much all the new Jags, especially the newer XJR's...omg. But I dont know older Jags have more of a majestic classic side to them compared to anything newer than the 2000 range era. Maybe its just because I like any older luxury cars better because of the REAL chrome and there's not too many left on the road!
