Get a later year model..the 2002 had a lot of first year issues..mostly corrected via TSBs and warranty...But save yourself some headaches and get a 2003or newer.

Well I disagree with what everyone has said about buying the later models of the x. I own an 02 and a lot of people bash the car for its problems yet the problems are tiny. Biggest thing to worry about is driveshaft, transfer case and tranny. Those are the weak links when speaking about the x-type. As I said though mine is an 02 with 70k miles on her and I haven't had to replace anything major out of my own pocket. Just be smart in what your buying and if you don't know what to look for take someone with you. Check the carfax and if your worried find one with the warranty. At least they can't decline fixing the major components of the car like drivetrain and what not. The 04 and 05's may be flawless but the pricepoint of the earlier x-type is more flawless imo. You could almost pay half the price for a earlier model and if worried buy a warranty on the car through a 3rd party and not worry about it, but still save thousands over the 04 and 05...

That's very true Aquill..very true and you made good sense too..BUT, the majority of the 02's were a problem and certainly there were a few good ones also, such as in your case...But it's the roll of the dice whether you get a good one or one of the problemed children, is just that, a roll of the dice..I personally would not want to take a chance and have all the little niggly problems sucking my enjoyment out of Jag ownership, waiting on constant repairs, warranty covered or not..

The problems that are more major are the transfer case, tranny and driveshaft. Even a powertrain warranty through any company will cover this fix. The other problems like doors linkages and other stuff like that every car has, other than the big problems the car is excellent no matter what the age. Shoot I drove a 2007 x-type that had the whine in the rear end, they should have every single thing worked out by now! Every car has its problems!

Every car has its problems!
A lot of people just can't get that through their heads either..seems like they expect a flawless car at the high prices paid...even Rolls has their little problems.

Or your favorite land rover for instance! LOL! I look at it this way, you want more things you pay for them, whether that be money or problems down the road your going to get them! You want more options your going to have problems! You want something flawless walk everywhere you go, although you could break your bones or get run over, but than you'll have some health problems! LOL!

If that makes sense!

Disagree about the majority of 02s having problems.
Yes youread about some issues on the net but how many 2002 X types were actually affected compared to the number built?
Again, like Aquill no major and only 1 or 2 minor probs on my March 02 car with 70k+ miles.
If I was in the market for a 2002 X type and it had its service history and test drove OK then I would go for it.

Mine was an 02 model that had 16k and 4 years old when I got her. A year later that was up to 29k approx and 5 years old. Never any real major issues as much as a few niggles here n there.
Never let me down, not once!

I had a “summer†car and a “winter†car for years. Here is what I learned: you have two insurance bills. You have two cars to maintain with oil changes and other day to day stuff. You constantly get phone calls from “friends†that want to borrow your car because something happened to theirs. As far as I am concerned it is double cost and double headaches! I am so happy I decided to buy this AWD Jag! One car is enough for me.

Just adding to the "how many 2002 x-types had problems?"
Just about every automatic had the trannys replaced. Propshafts and diffs too. Just saying.

Thanks FJT...I rest my case..BUT, those then were pretty much problem free of the big stuff and went on for many more trouble freemiles I would suspect...No?

Seems also that a lot more of the NA models didn't hold up as well as the European versions..Don't know what is up with that..But even the Land Rover had the same kind of tendencies..Just an observation..I've been an Admin on one Land Rover site and a Mod on another, and along with a large international member list, the statistics was about the same.

Case in point..The Land Rovers sent to the States almost ALL had the wrong tranny fluid from the factory and nearly every NA version had their Trannies replaced within the first 25k to 30k miles...and the European and Oz counter parts hardly ever had any tranny issues...Strange but true.

Come on guys, the Revolution happened a long time ago..let's get over it will ya....
