Are the wires connected to anything?

The plug is supposed to secure the end of the demister vent to the dash, but not very effectively. When the plug loosens and the vent end springs up, the plug makes an annoying rattle.

Two solutions:
a) Use RTV silicone or the like to 'glue' the vent and end plug to the dash, or
b) Attach a thin wire to the bottom of the plug and tie it off under the dash. Not elegant, but effective.

The wires may be there for this purpose. Just a hunch.

Yes I was trying to fix the popping up vent problem when I see the 2 wiring connections on the plug just wondering what it actually does apart from holding the vent down, the plug is also a semi transparent blue maybe a sensor for something?

The factory plugs for demister vents are the same solid color as the demister vents. A semitransparent blue plug with wires is perhaps an after-market modification, e.g., security system? Someone here will know.

It's as dwclapp says.

The auto lights sensor is in the rear view mirror.

I also have one. It's from factory. I have a sport . Maybe it is on those models only. None of my other cars have had it.

Glad to learn about this feature. Apparently the sunload sensor option was discontinued after the 2005MY.

Here's a couple JTIS references:
