I recently set off the alarm when I was in the car but it wasn't running. Now, I can only go in reverse. None of the forward gears work. I tried to use the key to enter the car and also disconnected the battery. Neither worked. Does anyone have a suggestion?

 

A little more info would be helpful. Is the car manual or automatic? Any problems with the car before this happened or was it running perfectly fine with no warning lights illuminated on the dash when this happened? Can you start the car and move the gear shift lever to all gears or only into reverse? If it is a manual, same questions. If it does not start, does it at least crank over? Is there a red light blinking light in the console near the gear shift lever like when the car is locked and teh alarm is active? What was teh exact circumstance that triggered the alarm and what did you do to stop it, diable it with the FOB or some other way?

Any additional info on the situation you can provide might be helpful in trying to diagnose it.

Thanks for your quick reply. Here is the additional information that is needed:
Transmission: Automatic
Running Condition: The car was functioning well before the problem arose; no warning lights illuminated on the dash board.
Shifting: I can shift the car into all gears but only "Reverse" works.
Starting: The car starts normally
Red Light on Console: It is blinking when the car is locked and the alarm is active
Trigger: I was in the car and I locked it and activated the alarm. I opened the rear, driver's side door accidentally and the alarm went off. I then used the FOB to deactivate the alarm, exited the car and then reactivated the alarm when I locked it.

I think that's about it. I appreciate anyone's help with this.

So, when you go from Park into Reverse, it works normally? Then if you put it in Neutral it works normally, but when you shift it to Drive, nothing happens? or is there any kind of noise or grinding or anything? What happens when you use the J-Gate and put it in 2, 3 or 4? Doesn't sound like the two events are related as the car starts as normal.

The car operates perfectly when I shift from Park to Reverse. Neutral is fine as well. (I had to push the car back into the parking spot!) There is no grinding when the car starts. I did try gears 2,3 and 4 to no avail.

It doesn't sound good but it is too coincidental that this happened after the alarm went off.

Does the gear you're in light up? P, N, R, etc.?

I sort of lean towards a failed TCM.

 

The panel does light up when I shift into all of the gears.
