Question Does this sound like a bad wheel bearing to you?

2003, Jaguar X-type with 110,000 miles. When I back out of the garage and start driving forward I get a grinding noise in the front, driver side wheel, sounds like a worn out brake disc digging into the brake drum, but brakes are not on. It started all at once. Doesn't start right away but begins grinding after driving about 100 feet down the driveway.. does this sounds like a wheel bearing?

shula, it could be a wheel bearing. Granted, could also be a bad CV joint too. If it doesn't do it in the forward direction, then I would be leaning more towards a CV joint. The CV joint will be especially noisy when turning under a load. Normally a wheel bearing makes more of a hum at speed and if you do a quick (but controlled) lane change to the left and then the right, the noise will be constant when going on direction and go away when going the opposite direction. IF this is the case, then the direction that you are changing lanes to that makes the noise go away is the side with the bad wheel bearing.
