Default Driver Deadlocking

Hi All,

How do I know if my car has deadlocking latches?

I am in the process of replacing my passenger side door latch and noticed two different part numbers for deadlocking vs non.

How can I be certain?

I also noticed the same part numbers are are listed with different vin ranges.

LHD, Deadlocking
RH, to VIN J31404 C2S48921 1
RH, from VIN L31405 C2S48921 1

LHD, Non-Deadlocking
RH, to VIN J31404 C2S48923 1
RH, from VIN L31405 C2S48923 1

My guess is that by deadlocking they are talking about the ability to prevent the doors from being opened on the inside. Those type locks are used on the rear passenger doors and the non deadlocking would be on the front passenger doors.
If you look on the door jamb where the lock mechanism is located the back doors will have a small area where you can put the tip of the key in turn making it so that the rear doors can not be opened from the inside.

So called deadlocking is mostly used on cars for the European marked.
One press on the FOB, the car locks, one more press and it deadlocks. You can hear it. Being deadlocked you cannot open any door from the inside.

The small levers on the rear doors are for child safety. Activated they prevent your grandchildren opening the doors and falling out.

Hi. No reference is made to "deadlocking" in my European handbook. There is however reference to "double locking" which is two quick presses of the lock button. This does double lock the doors and sets the intruder alarm so any movement within the car, i.e. breaking a window, sets off the alarm. It does warn that occupants would not be able to get out.
