Drivers side CV axle shaft seal possibly leaking
Hello all-
i had to have the entire drivers side axle shaft removed because I was having a wheel bearing fixed and things where impossible to separate in the normal way.
When the shop removed the axle lots of transmission fluid came out which we collected, measured and replaced at the end. I asked the shop (which specializes in axles only) if I needed a seal so I could get one delivered or purchased at the dealership, they insisted no seal was needed. We went back and forth until they convinced me the seal would be fine.
Now I think transmission fluid is leaking, possibly when the car is driving, as I had the car up for unrelated reasons (tires) and I saw a drop of fluid near the area. I ran my finger right thru the actual area where the shaft meets the axle and that seemed dry. Shop thinks it’s just fluid from yesterday when they took the axle out.
I regret not sticking to my gut feeling to change that seal.
Can anyone one give me advise on what to do here? I have cleaned the area as best as I could, but if it’s leaking while driving I would not know since the drops are probably getting burned of if it’s just weeping.
Has anyone change the drivers side axle without changing the shaft seal? Looks like the seal is a 20 dollar part C2S12111.

By axle shaft, do you mean the CV shaft. If so, yes the internal seal can be damaged if they pulled the shaft out too far.

No, that’s the right passenger side US, thank God I know that much after owning two of these cars....This is the drivers side one which can be removed like a normal car, but it’s the shaft seal that may be leaking
I have been checking on the seal getting under the car and the area seems dry.
Can anyone comment on having the seal changed or not? .... I am not sure it is common SOP to change the seal out when removing the left axle of not.
