Default ECU interchangeability

I have a 2003 X type base model and a 2003 xtype Berline as a parts car.Can I take the Berline ECU and put it in the base vehicle without having to program it?The Berline has all sorts of features that do not exist in the base unit such as the diagnostics etc.

Here's the challenge. You can't even replace the instrument cluster without having to program it to the computer so the same would be true if you replace the ECU. A few independents can do it for you, but most of the time you have to go to a dealer. Other than the IC I'm not sure what other parts require programing.

I think the way it works out is that any module that is not a part of the CAN BUS can be just plug and play. If it is a part of the CAN BUS then it is programmable. E.G. ECU = CAN BUS, Seat module = No CAN BUS.

The electrical manual provides a tree diagram of the CAN BUS

Can I change both the ECU and the instrument cluster together?

You need to change the engine ECU, Instrument Cluster, Keys/Remotes, ignition barrel and lock, and Drivers Door Module all together from one car in order for it to work without programming.

Call a dealer ahead of time and see what it costs to reprogram it. I have a new IC and they charged 2 hours of labor for it. Something like $250.

Can you please interpret your use of the word "Berline"? I assume that you are using this to mean "sedan" ... because there was no X-Type model named Berline - and every X-Type has diagnostics through the OBDII port...which model are you actually referring to?
