2003 jaguar x type 2.5 v6 knocks when rpms get to 800 - 1000. What are the possible causes?

When you say Knocks it covers a broad rang of sounds. With the hood up and someone else at the throttle does it sound like it is coming from the top of the engine or the bottom.

Is there a ticking or knocking noise at idle. Does it go away after 1000 RPM?
Is the Check engine light illuminated?
